BYD will launch a plug-in hybrid version of its Dolphin hatchback in Europe in 2026, according to Uk publication Autocar. This vehicle variant is currently not sold in China and appears to be engineered specifically for the European market.

The Tariff Workaround

In 2024, the European Union agreed to impose tariffs of up to 35% on Chinese-made battery electric vehicles. But those tariffs don't apply to PHEVs, which remain at the standard 10% tariff on imported petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles. BYD has stepped up the introduction of more PHEVs across its European lineup since the tariffs took effect.

The Dolphin PHEV, which will be called the BYD Dolphin G, fills the one segment where BYD currently lacks a plug-in hybrid offering: the small hatchback category. While the current BYD Dolphin EV and even the new BYD Dolphin Surf EV are subject to a 27% import tariff on Chinese Made BEVs, a new PHEV BYD Dolphin variant would only be subject to the 10% ICE import tariff.

This omission of PHEVs from the EV improt tariff structure has created an unintended outcome. Chinese PHEV exports to Europe rose 600% year-on-year in May 2025. Chinese Automatkers appear to be adapting to the situation, creating a strategic tariff arbitrage by developing PHEV variants of their BEV vehicles.

Feature-Rich Standard Equipment vs Option Packages

BYD's competitive approach centers on fully-equipped vehicles at affordable prices. Volkswagen sells the Golf GTE starting at €46,745, but buyers must add cost options to match feature levels that come standard on BYD models.

When European B-segment buyers compare a fully-loaded Dolphin PHEV at BYD's entry price against a Golf GTE requiring thousands in options to reach feature parity, the value equation shifts. This segment has always been price-sensitive. BYD is will not be able to compete in that segment with tariff-exempt pricing and standard equipment that eliminates the options game.

Systematic Portfolio Strategy

The BYD Dolphin G PHEV represents both targeted segment coverage and systematic portfolio expansion. BYD is addressing key European vehicle categories with PHEV variants: the Dolphin G targets the hatchback segment, while the Seal 06 DM-i Touring covers the station wagon category.

BYD vice-president Stella Li confirmed the Dolphin G would be the company's first car designed specifically for Europe rather than adapted from Chinese-market models.

Although, it appears she may have forgotten about the BYD E-Vali Full Electric Van that was made sepcifically for the European market and was not based on a vehicle made for the Chinese Domestic Market.

The Seal U plug-in hybrid led Europe's year-to-date PHEV market in September 2025, marking the first time a Chinese brand model topped Europe's cumulative PHEV standings. The Dolphin PHEV builds on that momentum in a segment where BYD previously had no offering.

What This Reveals About European Market Strategy

BYD is acknowledging that Europe has vehicle segments their current portfolio doesn't adequately address. The company is willing to engineer bespoke powertrains for regional markets when tariff structures and segment requirements demand it.

The 2026 timeline positions BYD to enter the European PHEV hatchback market as legacy automakers face tightening emissions regulations and profitability pressures on electrified models. BYD's vertical integration in battery and powertrain production creates manufacturing advantages that translate into competitive pricing even with PHEV complexity.

The strategic implication extends beyond one model. BYD is building a powertrain portfolio that removes both the infrastructure excuse and the tariff barrier from European purchase decisions. The Dolphin G PHEV tests whether BYD's brand positioning can translate from "affordable EV alternative" to "credible mainstream competitor" in Europe's most established vehicle segment.
