BYD Australia has announced that its compact ATTO 1 electric vehicle has achieved a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), establishing the model as the lowest-cost EV in Australia to receive the organization's highest safety designation. The rating applies to all ATTO 1 variants and positions the vehicle as a new benchmark for accessible safety in the electric mobility sector.

The ATTO 1 achieved strong performance across all major ANCAP assessment categories, scoring 82% for Adult Occupant Protection, 86% for Child Occupant Protection, 76% for Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 79% for Safety Assist. The vehicle earned maximum points in side-impact and oblique pole testing, as well as whiplash protection, demonstrating structural integrity among the best-performing vehicles in its segment.

The compact EV includes a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems as standard equipment, features typically reserved for premium vehicle segments. Standard safety technology includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Assist (LDA), Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA), Intelligent Speed Limit Control (ISLC), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and a direct driver-monitoring system.

The ATTO 1 demonstrated strong Autonomous Emergency Braking performance across diverse real-world scenarios involving cars, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, and junction situations. This active safety performance complements the vehicle's passive protection systems, including comprehensive cabin airbags and structural battery integration.

"Safety is fundamental to BYD's mission," said Stephen Collins, COO of BYD Australia. "The ANCAP rating underscores our commitment to delivering world-class vehicles with leading technology, exceptional value, and uncompromising protection for all road users."

The five-star rating addresses a market gap for budget-conscious EV buyers who previously faced limited options for vehicles combining affordability with proven safety credentials. The achievement is expected to influence safety standards across the affordable EV segment as buyers increasingly factor safety ratings into purchasing decisions.

The BYD ATTO 1 is now available for order in Australia, with pricing starting at $23,990 excluding on-road costs. The combination of five-star safety performance and accessible pricing establishes a new value proposition for safety-conscious compact EV buyers entering the electric vehicle market.
